Normally, my animals (horses, dogs and cats) do not have allergies but I have on occasion had certain individuals that have had reactions to nuts, Bees and insects. Some animals, like some people, have allergic reactions to various things. The most common allergic reacion I find in dogs is to nuts and bee stings. For this reason I do not recommend feeding peanut butter (although most dogs like it) and I really become concerned and keep a close eye when an animal is stung for the first time. For dogs, Benadryl 25mg for 25lb usually helps until your pooch can be seen by a veterinarian. The first thing you need to do is stabilize your pet, then you need to find the cause of the allergic reaction. Often this is harder to do. Several vets have told me that food allergies usually do not happen fast but I've seen allergic reactions to nuts occur within 15 -20 minutes. The most rapid allergic reaction is going to occur with a snake or insect bite. Gnats, flies, mosquitos, bees, fleas, spiders and mites are insects that can cause a problem. Food allergies can be related to peanuts and peanut oils, dairy and eggs being the most common culprits but some animals have a low tolerance for wheat and floor products. So, be sure to check your ingredients on your foods. If the problem is related to your household an overnight stay at the vet's office is not a bad idea to get the condition under control and the animal some relief. In horses gnats are a miserable culprit to various skin, eye and ear conditions. Too much insecticides can cause burning and skin blistering. Skin So Soft by Avon has been a big relief to some horses for flies, mosquitos and gnats. |
